Evaluation: Technologies

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Above are some of the technologies I have learnt to use throughout the process of constructing my products. I have used each of these technologies for different aspects of my final products.

Issuu

I have learnt to use Issuu for presenting information, analysis', and evaluations throughout my work. Issuu is a digital publishing platform for things like magazines. This is extremely relevant and helpful to my work. Issuu allows you to upload various documents and then embed them onto your blog. This helps make the presentation look a lot more professional and well laid out.

Photoshop

Photoshop is one of the more important technologies I learnt to use throughout the process of constructing my final products. Photoshop really contributed to the making of my three final products, and I learnt many different techniques in order to improve my work. For example:

The eyedropper tool was extremely important and helpful when constructing my three products. It allowed me to save the colours I'd been previously using so I could use them again on my products. This means I could use the exact same colour, and there wouldn't be any variation in the tones of red, yellow, etc. This allowed me to really stick to the rule of only using 4-5 colours in total on my products.

Image adjustments settings meant that I was able to slightly adjust the colour/hue of an image to suit the colour theme of the magazine. For example, I edited some of the smaller photos on my feature article page to make them more red/yellow toned so they'd compliment the rest of the colours on the page.

Lastly, the blending options became very useful as it allowed you to apply effects to text or photos to make them stand out more. For example, I used drop shadows and inner shadows/glow to make the quotes stand out more against the colourful background. This also made the text a lot easier to read.

Prezi

Prezi is presentation tool which can be used as an alternative to slideshow presentation programs such as PowerPoint. Instead of slides, Prezi allows you to create one large canvas where you can zoom in/out and pan around the canvas to emphasize ideas. Prezi allows me to upload pictures and information in a professional layout which allows to reader to flow through the presentation.

Slideshare

I've used Slideshare for a few of my evaluation presentations, and I think it provides a presentation similar to PowerPoint. It allows you to upload images/PDF files and turn them into a slideshow. Slideshare is helpful because it allows you to embed the slideshow on your blog. This creates an easy to read presentation which still looks professional.

Conclusion

In terms of presentation software and web spaces, Blogger was a bit contribution to my coursework. It allowed me to upload all of my coursework to one place, and organize my work into folders to make it easier to find/read. This blog is accessible to readers, which allows my teacher and classmates to look at my work and give me tips on how to improve. I'd say the only disadvantages of using free internet applications is that they're not 100% reliable. For example, towards the end of my coursework, both Prezi and Issuu were having problems which prevented me from uploading my work to my blog. However, aside from this, using web applications can be very beneficial because I was able to keep all of my work in one place whilst getting feedback from people on how to improve. Some of the applications have exclusive content which you can pay for to improve your use of the site/application. But the free version works efficiently enough to use on it's own. The disadvantage would be not being able to use all it has to offer for free.

Evaluation: Institutions

Based on the style and target audience of my magazine, as well as the magazines they've previously published, I think my magazine would be best suited with TeamRock. TeamRock are a small magazine publisher. Due to my target audience, I don't think that my magazine would be suited to a larger publishing company because it won't attract as many readers as say Bauer with Kerrang! magazine. My target audience is very narrowed down, and so it won't reach as many people as most extremely successful magazines. I'd say that TeamRock would be likely to get 'Revolution' sold in many well known retailers like WHSmith, Tesco, Asda, and other large supermarkets. This is because the magazines which TeamRock have already published (Metal Hammer, Classic Rock, etc) are all being sold in large, well-known distributors. I believe that this will attract more people to the magazine, and perhaps people who aren't a member of my target audience. I believe that TeamRock would have the ability and experience to get suitable advertisers for my magazine.

Though I think that TeamRock could be extremely beneficial for 'Revolution', I also have to think about other options. One option, which I think would work really well, is publishing the magazine online. While a lot of people prefer to have physical copies of the magazine, publishing it online will mean that it will reach a larger audience all around the world. Also, since my magazine is aimed at younger people, this could also suit them more because the younger generations are more reliant on technology. The online presence would really benefit the magazine. I think maybe having a combination of online and physical presence would be good. The physical copies of the magazine would mean reaching older generations, but the online presence means that young people in every country could have access to some content.
